The FURNITECTURE macro/micro studio is geared towards designing furniture and architecture for living within a specified volume. Grounded in a hands-on approach, the studio emphasizes both the process and 1:1 scale outcomes. By leveraging the apartment typology as a foundation for speculation, students engage in exploring and crafting new narratives for habitation.
Participants are assigned a designated volume within which they will conceptualize designs tailored to the life of a specific character. The exploration goes beyond conventional boundaries, challenging students to consider how space can be delineated horizontally and vertically, transcending traditional walls and ceilings. The overarching goal is to create multi-functional designs that achieve “compact spaciousness.” Additionally, the studio delves into the possibility of integrating additional functions into the design’s skin.
A key emphasis is placed on a rigorous design process characterized by iterative production. This approach provides students with insights into the intricate development and craftsmanship of fabrication, utilizing a range of tools and fabrication techniques from analog to digital. Through this studio, students gain a holistic understanding of design, fabrication, and material exploration, fostering a comprehensive learning experience
