This body of work was created as a result of the research I conducted during a New York, Greene St. Residency in 2005. The installation was assembled to explore the conceptual reciprocal relations between inhabiting time and place. The research investigated the relationship between those notions, which translated to a series of structures, which aim to capture the architectural concept created within a high-density landscape.
‘Between Spaces and Vases’ is a journey exploring parallels between time, place, session, large-scale architectural vessels, to small-scale domestic vessels. My intentions have encapsulated the circle of time between the macro to the micro.
During my research in New York, photographs, illustrations, and paper cut captured silhouette reflections and shadows of change. Using these times as ‘markers’, as a place to share the exploration and development of inhabiting time through the process. These narratives link and play with one another, revealing connections between the objects and their time of use.
Conceived whilst living in New York in 2005, the work comprises 20 handcrafted pieces in timber that adhere to a strict code of visual elements. Drawing on familiar images of domestic furniture which merges the archetypes of the seat, bench, pedestal, and table with small spherical vessels to produce an original collection of display structures for flowers. Alluding to architectural and artistic achievements of the 20th Century, a dialogue between icons of the metropolis, the concept of the vase, and the human body.
