Design Studio: Materiality

In this course, we’re embarking on a journey to challenge preconceptions about the functionality and aesthetics of public spaces, workplaces, and habilitation. Collaborating with Vision Australia, we’ll conduct design toolboxes to reimagine experiences at the Vision Australia Kooyong Office for both staff and families. Through ‘friendly interventions,’ we’ll live-prototype dynamic spaces that cater to work, socialization, and a sense of belonging.

This studio delves into the psychological and physical experiences of individuals, especially children, facing vision challenges in our rapidly changing world. As designers, our mission is to craft an environment that educates, transforms, and empowers children to evolve into independent leaders of the future.

The Design Studio unfolds at the Vision Australia Kooyong building, serving as a living-lab to prototype spaces derived from workshop insights. These spaces aim to foster a sense of community for families and staff, encouraging discovery, skill development, and the translation of innovations into daily life. Our exploration spans indoor and outdoor environments, creating opportunities for physical, conceptual, and social skill development.

Our design approach involves immersing ourselves in Vision Australia, focusing on positive impacts related to education, independence, and social inclusion. Subsequently, we’ll develop a plan and design tangible outcomes—a haptic experience comprising objects and spaces that support family-centered goals and empower individuals to lead the lives they choose.
